Synopsis

Whilst holidaying at a seaside village, Professor Aochi runs into his former colleague, the brutish philanderer and possible murderer, Nakasago. Catching up over dinner, they meet Koine, a geisha in mourning. As the lives of the two men intertwine periodically over the next decade, illicit love triangles, uncanny doppelgängers and ghostly encounters upend the realities of its characters—to the tune of Pablo de Sarasate’s haunting violin piece “Zigeunerweisen”.

Seijun Suziki’s second film after his decade-long disappearance from cinema marks the first of what would come to be known as the Taisho trilogy, notable for being set during Japan’s culturally vibrant Taisho period (1912-1926). The film was a critical and commercial hit in its home country and was awarded a Special Jury Mention at the Berlin Film Festival.
