Knowing and Re-knowing the Other

Hong Sang-soo and Éric Rohmer explore the uncertainties and the impossibility of fully knowing the other during romantic pursuits. Yourself and Yours and Autumn Tale both centre on characters dealing with identity, misunderstandings, and the hope of connection. Playing with chance encounters and mistaken identities, the two films perceptively ponder whether we ever truly know the ones we love or ourselves.

Synopsis
Youngsoo learns that his girlfriend, Minjung, recently had drinks with another man. This leads to a quarrel that seemingly ends their relationship. The next day, Youngsoo tries to find her. Minjung, however, has a series of encounters with other men who recognise her, but she seems like a different person each time.

Playful yet poignant, Yourself and Yours is one of Hong’s most enigmatic and emotionally resonant films. Through repeated encounters with ‘different versions’ of Minjung with various male characters, the film probes questions of love, trust, and the possibility of starting over in romantic relationships, as if people, like the narratives they create of others, can be rewritten.
