The Green Ray and Woman on the Beach are two films revolving around characters adrift, both emotionally and geographically. Set against the backdrop of a seaside resort, both films explore the idea of human connection through repetition, hesitation, and the search for the ‘real thing’, culminating in fleeting moments of revelation.

Synopsis

A creatively blocked filmmaker, Jung-rae, convinces his friend and his girlfriend, Mun-suk, to join him on a brief holiday at a seaside resort town of Shinduri to finish a script. Soon after, he begins an affair with Mun-suk. After spending a night together, Jung-rae emotionally withdraws from her and returns to the beach while the other two return to Seoul. Jung-rae, despite missing Mun-suk, meets and hits on Sun-hee, who resembles her, and finds himself in another web of emotional ambiguity and projection.

Moody and emotionally candid, Hong’s seventh feature exemplifies his concerns with emotionally stunted male characters fumbling through subtle repetitions of romantic encounters, and the search for the self, sometimes at the expense of others.
