Navigating Moral Terrains in Black and White 

Set over long conversations and chance encounters, My Night at Maud’s and The Day After explore the moral tensions between faith, choice, and self-deception. Working with stark black-and-white cinematography and elliptical storytelling, Rohmer and Hong craft their mundanely philosophical portraits of men at crossroads and the women who defy and elude their worldviews.

This screening will be preceded with an introduction by AFA programmer Natalie Khoo.

Synopsis

Book publisher Bongwan’s marriage is on the rocks after his wife discovers his affair with his assistant through a love poem written for him. His new assistant, the sharp and sensitive Areum, is left to navigate the fallout as she is mistaken for his former assistant by his wife.

The Day After and two of his other works in 2017 mark the start of Hong’s longstanding future collaboration with partner Kim Min-hee. Elliptical and incongruent in its structure, Hong examines the limits of language in capturing the nature of reality and what it means to live faithfully.
