Entangling of the Selves

In A Summer’s Tale and Our Sunhi, romantic indecision and being an unwitting object of desire become a mirror for deeper questions of identity and self-perception. The young protagonists, navigating life transitions, experience overlapping affections and shifting projections from and for others, revealing how personal uncertainty and misread intentions fuel emotional entanglements.

Synopsis

After a long absence, former film student Sunhi returns to her university to obtain a recommendation letter from her former professor. This inadvertently awakens vague romantic longings, first in her professor, then in an ex-boyfriend, and finally in a film director. The three men proffer career and life advice while attempting to define and “understand” Sunhi, though they seem to merely be projecting their feelings and interpretations onto their obscure and unwitting object of desire.

Told with Hong’s blend of dry humour and in subtle reframing of repetitive encounters, Our Sunhi offers an acutely observed take on misread behaviour, indecision, and awkward interchanges between the sexes in this moral comedy.
