Synopsis

Ah Na is an undocumented immigrant in New York City who finds work at a Chinese restaurant. Fleeing from persecution in her native Chinese village, she arrives in America only to encounter a different kind of oppression. In a naïve pursuit of the American Dream, Ah Na begins frequenting Grand Central Station’s so-called ‘Golden Palace,’ where Caucasian men seek out immigrant women. She meets Jack—a slick suburbanite whom she believes might offer her a new beginning, only to fall devastatingly short of her hopes.

Miss Wonton is Singaporean filmmaker Meng Ong’s debut feature that made its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2001 and won the FIPRESCI Prize at the 54th Locarno Film Festival.

The screening will be preceded by Waves of a Distant Shore (1992, 21 mins, Rating TBC), a short film by Meng Ong that won Best Director and the Special Jury Prize at the Silver Screen Award for Singapore Short Film at the 1992 Singapore International Film Festival.

Synopsis: A young street urchin, K, wanders the streets of Thailand shadowing American soldiers. He befriends an American sailor, and daydreams of the distant promise of life in America.
