Synopsis

In Sherman Ong’s Flooding in the Time of Drought (Drought), documentary and fiction are seamlessly blended to form an immersive and contemplative glimpse into the lives of foreign immigrants in Singapore. In Drought, the film is set amidst a fictional impending water crisis and features non-professional actors playing out scenes from their own lives, interweaving the dreams, regrets and hopes of the characters to present an intimate but universal tapestry of the immigrant experience. 

Commissioned by the Singapore Biennale, Flooding was Ong’s response to the Biennale’s theme of ‘Wonder’ and is his sophomore feature. It premiered at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam.
