Synopsis

Set in the idyllic Japanese village of Harasawa, single-father Takumi and his young daughter Hana live a peaceful existence in harmony with nature and the tightly-knit community that they are a part of. When a Tokyo-based corporation expresses their intentions to construct a glamping site for tourists, it is met with suspicion by the villagers who foresee the devastation that could befall the environment.

The latest entry in the ever-evolving filmography of contemporary master Ryusuke Hamaguchi takes the form of a restrained, eco-thriller that builds to an enigmatic and astonishing finale. Venturing into surprising creative territory, the film dives into complexities of moral subjectivity—an unflinching interrogation of human performativity, deceit and truth, yet imbued with a deep sense of compassion and humanism that exists at the core of Hamaguchi’s stories.
