Knowing and Re-knowing the Other

Hong Sang-soo and Éric Rohmer explore the uncertainties and the impossibility of fully knowing the other during romantic pursuits. Yourself and Yours and Autumn Tale both centre on characters dealing with identity, misunderstandings, and the hope of connection. Playing with chance encounters and mistaken identities, the two films perceptively ponder whether we ever truly know the ones we love or ourselves.

Synopsis

Set in the sun-drenched vineyards of southern France, Magali is a widowed wine grower whose best friend, Isabelle, is concerned about her loneliness now that her daughter has grown up. Isabelle secretly decides to find a new potential partner for Magali and puts an advert in a daily column. Her search for a suitable candidate leads her to Gerald.

The final instalment in Rohmer’s Tales of the Four Seasons, Autumn Tale, is a warm, intelligent meditation on friendship, ageing, and the complexities of love later in life. With its gentle pacing and ever-changing character dynamics, this is Rohmer at his most playful, where coincidences and misunderstandings shape female friendships.

Tales of the Four Seasons is a late-career cycle by Éric Rohmer comprising four films, each set in a different season and released between 1990 and 1998. Beginning with A Tale of Springtime and followed by A Tale of Winter, A Summer’s Tale, and Autumn Tale, the series offers a breezy and by turns melancholic portrait of love and chance shaped by the cyclical rhythm of the seasons.
