WORLD CINEMA DOCUMENTARY SPECIAL JURY AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN VERITÉ FILMMAKING Sundance Film Festival 2022
ASIAN PERSPECTIVE AWARD FOR BEST FILM, NEXT AWARD DMZ International Documentary Film Festival 2022
Synopsis
In the Rakhine State of Myanmar, where members of the Muslim Rohingya population are persecuted at the hands of the military, two midwives run a clinic, providing medical services to their fellow villagers. Hla, the elder and more experienced, is Buddhist, while her apprentice, Nyo Nyo, is Muslim. Despite Hla’s humanitarian convictions as a doctor, virulent anti-Muslim sentiments among the Buddhist community complicate her relationship with Nyo Nyo.
Meanwhile, Nyo Nyo dreams of living as a modern woman in the city. When her escape plans are thwarted, she commits to helping her community, giving lessons to Rohingya children who are unwelcome in government schools, while making plans to set up her own clinic.
Filmed over five tumultuous years, both before and after the 2021 coup d’état, director Snow Hnin Ei Hlaing’s feature documentary debut is a powerful portrait of female friendship and self-determination against the odds.
