2. Pontianak Gua Musang (1964, Singapore)
14 Oct, 4.00pm – 6.00pm, Woodlands Regional Library, B1 Auditorium
PG / B&W / Malay / English subtitles / 122 min
Director B. Narayan Rao
Cast: Suraya Haron, Malik Selamat, Ghazali Sumantri, Umi Kalthum

Rohani and Halimah are relatives who both fall in love with the same man, Amran, who eventually chooses to be with Rohani. Driven by jealousy, Halimah plots to kill the pregnant Rohani, who dies after giving birth to a baby girl. The baby, Comel, grows up to resemble her mother, leading Halimah to believe that Comel is the reincarnation of Rohani, out to seek vengeance.
Based on Southeast Asian folklore, the Pontianak is a vampiric ghost of a woman who had tragically perished during childbirth. The spirit takes form of a beautiful woman who entices her victims before turning into a ghastly creature and attacking them.

Pontianak Gua Musang is the last of B. N. Rao’s Singapore-made Pontianak films following the peak of Malay horror cinema in the 1950s. Shot on a low budget, the use of trick photography, makeup and humour became unique signifiers to the genre.

Country bumpkin Pod travels to Bangkok from the countryside, refusing to heed his granny’s warning that he will grow a tail if he lived in the city. He finds a soulmate in Jin and they both live out their fantastical lives while trying to fulfill their dreams.
Based on a novel written by Wisit’s collaborative partner and wife, this colourful and surrealistic Thai romantic comedy has been frequently compared to Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Amélie.

Influenced by the Thai melodramas of the 1950s and 1960s, Wisit transforms the setting of contemporary Bangkok into a world similar to that of Wizard of Oz, where grandma reincarnates as a gecko, fingers reattach themselves and a dead motorcyclist becomes a zombie.
This film has screened at the Berlin Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival and the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, and commercially in France.
