Inspired by Albert Camus’ The Plague, Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow is a reflection of director Patrick Lung Kong’s humanist concerns. A fast-acting virus spreads through Hong Kong after a rat infestation in the slums, inducing panic when the government is slow to react. Mercilessly cut down by censors for its frank portrayal of class and political conflicts at the time of its release, the film found new critical acclaim during the SARS outbreak decades later. In 2011, it was listed by the Hong Kong Film Archive as one of the 100 must-see Hong Kong films of all time.
Important note: the copy of Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow that AFA will be screening is from the Hong Kong Film Archive, and this copy has been censored in parts. No other copy has yet been discovered. There will be moments of no dialogue or black screens in parts as such.
