Synopsis

1997. Fenyang, China. A time of transformation for a nation that will soon become the economic titan that it is today. Left behind by friends and family, the film’s titular character, a ne’er-do-well and petty criminal, drifts through town as he runs into trouble, falls in love, and catches glimpses of a world changing too fast for him to keep up with.

Shot guerilla style with a cast of non-professional actors, this debut feature, which launched the career of filmmaker Jia Zhangke, received plaudits at international film festivals during its time and is now considered a major work of contemporary Chinese cinema.

Restored by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project and Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, in collaboration with Jia Zhangke and in association with MK2. The restoration is funded by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation.
