Synopsis

A dreamlike companionship of myths and longing blooms between students Umi and Xiao, as they while away their night shifts at a university library. Umi, whose name means sea, fantasises in the library amidst an ocean of possibilities. As her 21st birthday approaches and the real world awaits, Xiao promises to share a secret letter she had hidden in the library’s books for Umi.

In a lulling vision etched on 16mm over ten years, Us and the Night unfolds a love letter to the library’s labyrinthe shelves and aisles on the eve of the internet age. A story of stories, where youthful imaginations flow from text to intertext, sinkinging into the rabbit hole and abandoning all else in the world.
