A dryly satirical yet empathetic take on the disconnect between Japan’s aggressively cheery media and its people’s post-traumatic experience of their own mortality. On assignment in Uzbekistan, travel TV host and aspiring singer Yoko (Atsuko Maeda) adopts a chipper persona on camera. But as she smiles her way through half-cooked delicacies and a hazardous fairground ride, she seems on the verge of crisis. Her crew indifferent to whether she lives or dies, Yoko’s anxious texts to her firefighter boyfriend back home constitutes her only connection. Will he be called to another disaster? Meanwhile, ignorance causes her to fearfully dart through every alley and startle at every corner. However, an enchanting musical performance at an old theatre, and a dispute over a goat’s freedom, leads Yoko on the path towards embracing uncertainty.
