Synopsis

Small and great wonders come together in this coming-of-age story set in the Tuscan countryside. During an extraordinary summer, the strict rules that hold 12-year-old Gelsomina’s family together begin to fall apart; Martin, a German boy on a youth rehabilitation programme comes to live on their bee farm while a TV competition “Countryside Wonders” beckons local farmers to participate. As tensions escalate within their family, Gelsomina grapples with her father’s smothering affection and her own desires.

Inspired by Rohrwacher’s upbringing in the Tuscan countryside and experience with beekeeping, The Wonders counters the romanticised view of the countryside with unvarnished realities of rural, agricultural life, raising questions of selfhood amidst complex familial and cultural ties.
