Li Xun-huan, known as Dagger Li (Ti Lung), is a skilled and compassionate martial artist. He returns to his hometown to protect his former lover, Lin Shih-yin (Yu-An-an), from the enigmatic swordsman Mei Hua, who challenges him to a duel. During his journey, he forms a close bond with a wandering swordsman named Ah Fei (Derek Yee) and becomes entangled in a conspiracy to frame him for the theft of martial arts secrets. As the story unfolds, it builds to a climactic showdown, compelling the sentimental Li to make a challenging decision regarding his old benefactor.

Wang Sha makes a special appearance as Mei Erh, a skilled healer in this film. He made intriguing guest appearances in the subsequent series of wuxia films directed by Chor Yuen.

十年前,李寻欢(狄龙 饰)以“小李飞刀”的绰号名震江湖,却在将心爱的表妹林诗音(余安安 饰)让给兄弟龙啸云(岳华 饰)娶为妻后选择退隐江湖。十年后,神秘剑客“梅花盗”再度出现,江湖上飘着李寻欢就是梅花盗的传言。为了给自己正名,同时也见一见一直挂念着的林诗音,李寻欢决定再度出山,并在途中结识高傲的独行剑客阿飞(尔冬升 饰)。当李寻欢回到龙啸云的兴云庄时,他惊讶地发现早已物是人非,贪婪无耻肆意践踏江湖道义,血雨腥风再度掀起……
