Synopsis

Based on the poetic novel The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke by C.J. Dennis, Bill, a rough-around-the-edges but good-hearted larrikin living in the working-class streets, falls for Doreen, a shopgirl with strong values. Bill tries to leave behind his old life of brawling and petty crime to become a better man. 

A major critical and commercial success upon its release in Australia, the film is widely regarded as one of the most significant works of the silent era—and one of the few Australian silent films to have survived in its entirety. NFSA’s restoration features a new score by award-winning electronic musician Paul Mac. 

This silent film reflects the attitudes of the period in which it was made. It could contain language and representations that some viewers may find offensive. These elements have been retained in their original form for historical context and transparency.
