Married couple Emad and Rana play the lead roles in a stage production of Arthur Miller’s seminal work Death of a Salesman. When their apartment starts to collapse, they hastily relocate to a new place, where Rana is attacked by a stranger. As she deals with the trauma, Emad becomes obsessed with tracking down the assailant. The impact of this singular event rips and unravels their lives, along with their relationship.

Director Asghar Farhadi pays homage to his theatrical background with Miller’s play, which serves as a powerful leitmotif that mirrors the film’s characters and themes, as life and art blend into each other in uncanny ways.
