Sultan Mahmood Mangkat Di-julang is a historical drama set in the 17th century, based on Malay folklore. Admiral Megat Sri Rama, returns home triumphant in battle and love, having rescued and married Wan Anum whom he rescued during a crusade. Jealousy and resentment against the admiral’s victories soon brew within the kingdom. The admiral is sent on an expedition against sea pirates, leaving a pregnant Wan Anum to fend for herself amidst political intrigue and danger.

The film is celebrated for its stellar cast from the Cathay-Keris studio and is considered one of the finest achievements in the studio’s collection of historical dramas from the 1950s – 60s golden age of Malay cinema. The restoration of Sultan Mahmood Mangkat Di-julang was made possible using the surviving 16mm and 35mm prints from the Asian Film Archive: Cathay-Keris Malay Classics Collection.
