Full Synopsis

Three middle-aged duds (Alain Uy, Ron Yuan, and Mykel Shannon Jenkins) attempt to reconstruct their youthful kungfu prowess to avenge the mysterious death of their sifu. This independent film is a rare martial arts comedy, both reveling in and criticicing the general pan-Asian-American embarrassment of the geeky dad and karate kid tropes. Director Bao Tran, who rejected Hollywood financing to preserve his directorial vision for this film, cut his teeth with director and action choreographer Corey Yuen, whose influence shows in The Paper Tigers’ kinetic and inventive fights—though the film’s warm charm is wholly heartfelt and unique.

This film is featured in the strand American Trash, part of the Constellating Histories: Encountering Asian American Diasporas Onscreen programme. For the full programme lineup please click here.
