Set in a small village in South-Eastern China during the Cultural Revolution, a bored teenager spends most of his time hanging around in the street. He develops a bond with an old widower, who earns his living making artistic paper shapes of people and animals. As the boy discovers the sad story of the man’s daughter, Qingqing, who died by a stray bullet, he begins to have dreams about the beauty of Qingqing.
Produced as an experimental film by students at the Beijing Film Academy, The Paper is the debut directorial feature of Ding Jiancheng, who studied art at the Army Arts Academy and cinematography at the Beijing Film Academy. The film was a recipient of the Hubert Bal Funds and premiered at the 2000 International Film Festival Rotterdam. In 2021, the AFA digitised the sole known surviving copy of the 35mm release print.

Reciprocal 2023 runs from 2 – 25 June 2023. See the full programme here.
