Full Synopsis
Based on a screenplay co-written by Yasujirō Ozu and Ryôsuke Saitô (who also worked together on the 1948 film A Hen in the Wind, starring Kinuyo Tanaka), Tanaka’s second directorial work is a lightly-comedic drama about a widower and the romantic prospects of his three daughters, set against the backdrop of the bucolic town of Nara.
Engaging with some of the distinctive features of Ozu’s cinema, such as the use of the famed tatami shot (where the camera is placed close to ground, at eye-level of a person kneeling on a traditional tatami mat) and casting Ozu regular, Chishû Ryû (Tokyo Story), in the lead role of the father, Tanaka pays sincere homage to the veteran filmmaker, while masterfully drawing out a unique sense vigour and charm through her precise command of performance and cinematography.
Retrospective: Kinuyo Tanaka is held in conjunction with Japanese Film Festival Singapore, and has been made possible with the generous support of the Japan Foundation.
