Synopsis

Soon-seok travels with his deceased wife’s ashes, seeking to scatter them near her hometown by the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea. Along his travels, he encounters two hostesses who each die of mysterious circumstances soon after his departure. Meanwhile, a nurse escorting a dying elderly man to his hometown reveals to Soon-seok that she is destined to marry a man with three coffins.

Made in a spontaneous and improvisatory manner, featuring avant-garde montage techniques and an evocative monochrome colour palette, The Man with Three Coffins is regarded as one of the most unique and captivating Korean films of the 1980s. It won the Caligari Film Award at the 1988 Berlin International Film Festival. The film was digitally restored by the Korean Film Archive in 2021.
