Synopsis

In William Wyler’s sleek noir adaptation of Somerset Maugham’s play, rubber plantations and ‘Chinese quarters’ of colonial-era Singapore become sultry playgrounds for murder, scandal and corruption. Dripping with inky elegance from start to end, Bette Davis stars as the enigmatic wife of a rubber-plantation administrator, who publicly shoots a man to death. She claims self-defense but a letter surfaces, which might prove her undoing.

Based on the real-life 1911 murder case that shook the British expatriate community in Kuala Lumpur, Wyler’s film reimagines the colonial mistress and murderess as a figure of feminine mystique: misunderstood, restless and stranded in exotic tropical lands.
