Detective Byeong-ho takes on his latest assignment, the mysterious murder of a brewery owner. What begins as a routine investigation leads Byeong-ho to uncover the tragic past of the victim’s associates involving their activities as Communist partisans during the Korean War. What follows paints a thoroughly bleak and uncompromising portrait of a society mired in corruption and complicity.

The late Director Lee Doo-yong (1942 – 2024) penned the original opening text in the film to warn viewers of its dark storyline and grim visuals. The film was heavily censored upon release with almost an hour’s worth of footage cut. The cut footage has been reinstated in this director-approved digital restored version by the Korean Film Archive.

The Last Witness (1980) is considered an orphan work in South Korea. If you are the copyright holder of the film or know who is, please contact the Asian Film Archive.
