Synopsis
Following three protagonists from Bangkok, The Island Funeral artfully frames Thailand’s fragmented political sphere in the form of a road trip to the heavily militarised southern province of Pattani. Two Muslim siblings—accompanied by their non-Muslim friend and, later on, a mysterious Thai soldier—navigate the anxious and unforgiving landscape torn by rebellion, only to discover a remote island on the cusp of fantasy and reality.
As tensions mount in the political heat, the three friends are confronted with their own prejudices and ruminations of gender, religion, and ethnicity. In the surreal quietude of the winding river and the rural forest, an imagined community emerges—mapless and without boundaries.
