Synopsis
A pseudo-documentary set in 1941, an old ship carpenter J.C. Sullivan relates his experiences aboard the Hollandia during a top-secret expedition to the South Pole in 1905. Sullivan shows the films thought to have been shot by a cameraman on the journey in support of his story.
Fragments of authentic moving images filmed at the North and South Poles at the beginning of the 20th century by cameramen such as Frank Hurley and Herbert Ponting, were found in the collection of the Netherlands Film Museum by director Peter Delpeut and incorporated into the film. The Forbidden Quest won the Special Jury Prize at the 1993 Netherlands Film Festival.
Reciprocal 2023 runs from 2 – 25 June 2023. See the full programme here.
