Synopsis

In The Crazy Bumpkins, Ye Feng stars as the endearing character Ah Niu, who departs from his rural hometown in pursuit of a prosperous life in the bustling city. Upon arriving in Hong Kong, he takes up residence with his seemingly harmless Uncle Chou, portrayed by Wang Sha, only to discover Chou’s involvement in criminal activities. Ah Niu’s comically unsuccessful attempts to participate in these unlawful ventures add a lighthearted twist to the story. Along the way, he encounters Ah Hua, a compassionate young widow played by Ai Ti, who inspires him to seek an honest path. Despite his sincere efforts, Ah Niu’s innocence and a series of misfortunes ultimately plunge him into deeper challenges and adversity.

The Crazy Bumpkins marks the inaugural cinematic collaboration between Wang Sha and Ye Feng, a partnership performance that proved immensely successful. The film’s triumph led Shaw Brothers to expand the ‘Crazy Bumpkin’ story into a tetralogy that traced the adventures of Ah Niu, thereby cementing the actors’ esteemed status and subsequent cinematic endeavours.
