RESTORED VERSION

Original Title: Shatranj-e Baad / شطرنج باد
Directed by: Mohammad Reza Aslani
Runtime: 93 minutes
Country:  Iran
Language:  Farsi with English subtitles
Rating: PG

Synopsis

In the wake of a rich matriarch’s death, tensions over inheritance run high between her embittered second husband and her disabled daughter. A heady mix of greed, murder and paranoia simmer to a boil as the setting of the luscious palatial manor slowly mutates into a gothic house of horrors.

Screened publicly just once in Tehran and  banned in 1979 after the Iranian Revolution, The Chess Game of the Wind was believed to have been lost for more than four decades until its miraculous discovery in an antique shop in 2015.

Restoration Notes

The film was restored in 4K in 2020 by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project and Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna. Using the original 35mm camera and sound negatives, the film was worked on by L’Image Retrouvée laboratory (Paris) in collaboration with Mohammad Reza Aslani and Gita Aslani Shahrestani.
