Synopsis

In an effort to save her wilting theatre troupe during the post renovation (Đổi Mới) era, Kim Ha, a once-revered actress known for her stunningly long hair, vied for by all, including an unnamed Singaporean woman, reluctantly returns to the stage for a leading role opposite her estranged ex-lover. To their community, the leading couple and Kim Ha’s iconic hair ignites new hope of returning to the troupe’s glory days of state funding and national recognition. But ensuing rehearsals trigger bitter tension, dredging up buried resentments and painful pasts that threaten to boil over.

A rare gem of early 2000s Vietnamese cinema and featuring some of its biggest actors, The Backstage Slap spins a gripping allegory on the struggle to move on, against the backdrop of Vietnam’s post-war economic reforms.
