Full Synopsis
Bassley, a Nigerian footballer, is stuck in the labyrinthine slums of Ho Chi Minh City after a leg injury ends his career. He retreats to a derelict building with four Vietnamese women, Mien, Trang, Hanh, and Thuong, whom he does odd jobs for. Together, they cook, bathe, watch television, have sex, and care for a piglet—each moment a stoicly wordless ritual punctuated by rare peals of hysterical laughter. The world suspended between the five of them becomes a respite, however fragile, from their unsaid yet ever-looming predicaments.
As much a hypnotic study of bodily poetics as it is a rumination on the promises of globalisation and its discontents, this entrancing feature-length debut heralds the arrival of a potent new voice in Southeast Asian cinema.
