About the Talk
Amoy-dialect cinema existed only fleetingly in the history of Chinese-language cinema. Yet its brief existence posed new challenges to the industry and continues to destabilise dominant or mainstream understandings of Chinese-language cinema today. This talk introduces this little-known film industry by asking two key questions: Why do film historians regard Amoy-dialect cinema as an “oddity”? What interventions did Amoy-dialect cinema make in the world of Chinese-language cinema?

Yeo Min Hui is senior lecturer (Chinese Studies) at the Singapore University of Social Sciences. She writes primarily on Singapore and Malayan cultural history. She has written and published on Amoy-dialect cinema, Malay cinema, and Hong Kong cinema. She was the curator of the exhibition Comic Relief: Film Retrospective and Exhibition on Wang Sha and Ye Feng organised by the Asian Film Archive. (www.yeominhui.com).
