Synopsis

In Sweet Dreams, the lush landscape of a remote Indonesian sugar plantation in 1900 sets the backdrop for an enthralling exploration of Dutch colonial absurdity. When the death of plantation owner Jan exposes family secrets, a chaotic power struggle is triggered. With striking visuals and meticulous period details, the film captures the microcosm of colonial life, echoing the stylised visuals of films such as Lucretia Martel’s Zama and Yorgos Lanthomos’s The Favourite.

Amsterdam-based Bosnian filmmaker, Ena Sendijarević, celebrated for her acclaimed short film Import and debut feature Take Me Somewhere Nice, directs with finesse, blending caustic historical commentary with offbeat humour. Co-produced with Sweden and Indonesia, the film was the Netherlands’ official Oscar submission.

Do note that Oldham Theatre operates on a free seating arrangement. Doors will open 20 minutes before showtime so arrive early to choose a seat and avoid disrupting the screenings as AFA does not play ads and screenings will start promptly.

All patrons are encouraged to purchase your tickets online. If you choose to purchase tickets or merchandise at Oldham Theatre’s box office, cashless payment is preferred.
