Synopsis

A town in Fengjie county is gradually being demolished and flooded to make way for the Three Gorges Dam. A coal miner in search of his ex-wife, and a woman looking for her estranged husband, become witness to the societal changes as they visit the village to locate their respective spouses.

Jia renders the film in a painterly style, staging cinematic portraits of his characters and the landscape through careful framing, static shots, and long takes. These scenes create tableaux of bodies and the city, temporally and spatially suspended on the brink of oblivion. These bleak, still moments are interrupted by surreal episodes which manipulate space and depth, drawing out the relationships between character and landscape, the locals and their environment. Jia’s commentary on the controversial construction of the Three Gorges Dam calls into question mass displacement and environmental destruction in the name of progress.
