Yu-bong is a practitioner of pansori, a Korean genre of musical storytelling that originated centuries ago. After training his children Song-hwa and Dong-ho to become pansori performers , Yu-bong and his family lead a life of hardship on the road as they practice their craft from place to place, struggling to keep the tradition alive against the tide of Western culture.

A box office sensation that revitalised Korean cinema at home, Sopyonje is arguably the crowning achievement of Director Im Kwon-taek, one of Korea’s most important and prolific filmmakers. The digitally restored version by the Korean Film Archive features new English subtitles that include key translations of the pansori segments.
