Sonita is an Afghan refugee living in the poor suburbs of Tehran. A spirited young woman, she fights to live the way she wants, despite the obstacles she faces in Iran and from her conservative family. After her family attempts to sell her into marriage, Sonita channels her frustrations and seizes her destiny through rap, spitting fiery rhymes in the face of oppressive traditions. Sonita is a record of her struggle towards independent womanhood. But it is also an autocritique of conventional documentary ethics. Rather than pretending “objectivity” and letting her subject’s story unfold “naturally,” director Maghami paid off Sonita’s family to relieve her situation, even aiding in her music career. The film is thus an inspiring portrait of intergenerational female solidarity as well.
