Synopsis

In the year 2006, an unknown virus hits an imaginary country, leaving it in a desolate, post-apocalyptic state where fashion accessories act as currency. A girl battles a podium dancer, a Japanese schoolgirl, a street gangster and various other characters to win the last pair of limited edition New Balance ‘576’ sneakers in existence, that would make her the envy of all.

Synopsis

Desolate after discovering her husband’s infidelity, clinician and luxury shoe collector Sun-jae attempts to start over in a dilapidated apartment with her daughter Tae-soo. One day, she discovers and becomes enamoured with a striking pair of heels left on a train, but soon realises that claiming them comes with horrific consequences.

Ushering a trend of fairytale retellings during the K-horror craze of the early 2000s, The Red Shoes is a gritty adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s cautionary tale of the same name. Kim Yong-gyun spins a fable brandishing the moral hysteria of materialism and female vanity into dark, dripping hallways roamed by long-haired spectres and neon coloured pumps.
