Full Synopsis

Jackie Chan takes on the western as Chon Wang (pronounced like John Wayne), a Chinese imperial guard looking for a kidnapped princess (Lucy Liu) in Carson City, Nevada. After a train hijacking, Wang teams up with outlaw Roy O’Bannon (Owen Wilson), who teaches him how to be a cowboy, and try to save the princess together—though things are not quite what they seem! After Rumble in the Bronx introduced Jackie Chan to American audiences, he starred in over-the-top and hilarious franchises like Shanghai Noon, whose comedy turns on Wang’s ignorance of the “uncivilized” early American West.

This film is featured in the strand American Trash, part of the Constellating Histories: Encountering Asian American Diasporas Onscreen programme. For the full programme lineup please click here.
