Synopsis

Rama, a young novelist and professor, attends the trial of Laurence Coly, a Senegalese woman accused of murdering her 15-month-old daughter by abandoning her on a beach in northern France. Hoping to use the case as material for a modern adaptation of the Medea myth, Rama becomes increasingly unsettled during Laurence’s testimony. As the trial unfolds, deeply buried emotions and personal anxieties surface, forcing Rama to confront her own identity, cultural heritage, and fears about motherhood.

Alice Diop’s first narrative feature, Saint Omer is based on an actual court case in 2016 where she attended the trial, blending both docudrama and metafiction. The shifting of perspectives and gazes offers a restraint and meditative exploration of race, womanhood, and the complexities of maternal experience.
