Synopsis

Set in Taiwan in the 1960s, the film portrays a community of local Taiwanese and mainland Chinese residents living near Lung Shan Temple. Watch the Queen of Amoy-dialect films, Singaporean star Zhuang Xue Fang/Chong Sit Fong (also Chng Soot Fong), in a rare Mandarin speaking role as Hsiao-fang. In order to support her ailing father, Hsiao-fang sells medicinal wine at a market stall. Dreaming of becoming a singer, Hsiao-fang attracts the customers’ attention with her enchanting voice. Tang Liang, a local Taiwanese man working at the radio station, and Lo Chung, a Chinese photographer fall for the beautiful Hsiao-fang. Trying to win her heart, Tang Liang and Lo Chung not only do everything they can for her but come up with all sorts of tricks to impress the girl. While pursuing love, the trio laugh and clash with one another. Soon, their entwined fates take them by surprise.

Through the mix of Taiwanese and Mandarin, Romance at Lung Shan Temple speaks of people longing to live in harmony. The film scores were written by the renowned composer Chou Lan-ping including Tiu-tiu Tâng-á, a Taiwanese folk song sung in a mix of Taiwanese and Mandarin at the end of the film. The film was a box-office success in Taiwan and was also released in Hong Kong and other Southeast Asian countries. However Pai Ko was arrested and executed by the Taiwan Garrison Command just as the film was released. Romance at Lung Shan Temple is one of the few films by Pai that is preserved.
