As Afghanistan’s first metal band, District Unknown (DU) spoke to the disenchanted youths of war-torn Kabul, encouraging alternative forms of expression and identities. However, as a Western-style underground party scene developed around them, DU and their fans became targets of the Taliban. Their grassroots movement, provocatively encouraging participation from men and women alike, threatens to crumble under the weight of the conservatism around them. In the line of fire, will these headbanging Afghans stay to win their peers’ hearts and minds, or will they leave for a safer life abroad? In this documentary, Australian filmmaker Travis Beard, longtime friend of DU and resident of Kabul, chronicles a cultural struggle within Afghan life that has rarely been covered by the global media.
