About the Programme
The film programme of Retrospective: Edward Yang accompanying the exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of Edward Yang’s filmmaking career. In addition to his notable works, such as Terrorizers, A Brighter Summer Day, and Yi Yi: A One and a Two…, it also covers his earlier projects before he participated in the anthology film In Our Time with his short film “Expectations” in 1982. These include his first venture as a co-writer in The Winter of 1905, his directorial debut in Floating Weeds from the episodic drama series Eleven Women, and a trial shooting segment from his unfinished last work, The Wind.
Edward Yang wrote in his notes: “Film is everyone’s ‘next hour’. Imagining one’s own situation in the next hour is the most immediate and relevant topic for everyone at the present moment. Those in the next hour are intricately connected to everything in the past. The cause and effect, the intricacies, and the upcoming situation are all concrete and tightly woven, with an unbreakable cause-and-effect relation.”

The screenings of Edward Yang’s filmography run from 1 – 24 November 2024 at Oldham Theatre. They should be watched in context to the accompanying free exhibition presented at the Oldham Theatre foyer from 1 November – 29 December 2024.

The second part of the film programme, Four Favourites with Edward Yang will run from 14 – 29 December 2024 at Oldham Theatre.
In 1992, Edward Yang was invited by the British Film Institute’s Sight & Sound magazine to participate in a poll for the greatest films in cinema history. He listed his top ten films of all-time, which were later published in volume 28 of the film magazine Influence in 1993, Taiwan. AFA’s film programme presents some of these renowned masterpieces from Edward Yang’s perspective through a modern 2024 perspective, calling to mind the cinema platform Letterboxd and their “Four Favourites”. It is intended to offer a deeper insight to Yang’s cinematic influences and approach to filmmaking.
