4K RESTORATION
Original Title: 東京物語
Director: Yasujirō Ozu
Runtime: 136 mins
Country: Japan
Language: Japanese with English Subtitles
Rating: PG

Synopsis

Aging couple, Tomi and Sukichi, journey to visit their two adult children in Tokyo. Their children, preoccupied with work and their own lives, regard the visit as a burden and have little time for them. Only their widowed daughter-in-law, Noriko, shows them warmth and kindness. As the trip unfolds, the parents quietly face neglect, disappointment, and the inevitability of aging and loss.

In this new 4K digital restoration, Ozu’s widely acclaimed masterpiece is an understated exploration of the mores of filial piety and the ever-widening generational gap between parent and child, a work that is rooted in postwar Japan yet deeply human and transcends time.

The programme is held in conjunction with the 2025 Japanese Film Festival Singapore, and is made possible with the generous support of the Japan Foundation.
