Synopsis

Widely regarded as the greatest Spanish film of the 1970s, Victor Erice’s spellbinding The Spirit of the Beehive returns in a breathtaking 4K restoration. Set in the wake of the Spanish Civil War in a small Castilian village, six-year-old Ana watches Frankenstein (1931) at a travelling movie show and is possessed by the memory of it. As she continues her escape into fantasy and imagination, her macabre visions of the monster become more vivid and unsettling…

The Spirit of the Beehive is visually arresting and presents a bewitching portrait of a child’s haunted inner life. Occupying an otherworldly space between its dreamlike sequences and desolate realities, the film constructs a deeply disquieting portrayal of rural life under an oppressive regime through the lens of its adolescent protagonist.

Arrive early so as not to disrupt the screenings. All patrons are encouraged to purchase your tickets online to be able to secure a seat. If you choose to purchase tickets or merchandise at Oldham Theatre’s box office, cashless payment is preferred.
