Synopsis

Step into the vibrant, electrifying world of 1940’s Shanghai nightlife with a brand new 4K restoration of Tsui Hark’s classic Shanghai Blues (1984). Tsui brings together film and music icons Sylvia Chang, Kenny Bee, and Sally Yeh in an absurd romantic comedy replete with musical numbers, slapstick, and old-school special effects.

Shanghai, 1937— Tung (Kenny Bee), a young soldier, and Shu (Sylvia Chang) meet beneath a bridge during an air raid. Under the cover of twilight, they experience a magnetic attraction and plan to reunite when the war is over. Ten years later, a twist of fate brings Tung and Shu together in the same apartment building. Stool (Sally Yeh), a young girl from the countryside, falls for Tung and wacky love triangle shenanigans ensue.

Tsui Hark’s ode to the golden age of Hollywood contrasts high-octane setpieces with the chaos and collective anxiety of a city recovering from war. His characters weave through smoky night clubs and bustling streets, tempering post-war world-weariness with lighthearted humour and an undimming sense of hope.
