About the programme

Rest & Relax presents 12 film screenings that delve, ebb, flow and toy with our desire to unwind from our lives. While we immerse ourselves in fiction to escape reality, these moving pictures often stubbornly reflect and return us to our grapplings in the real world through satire, comedy or glimmers of hope. From soothing mumblecore with Hong Sang-Soo, Ryusuke Hamaguchi and Abbas Kiarostami, to coming-of-age vignettes, hallucinogenic daydreams and cosy Hayao Miyazaki adventures, enter tales and universes where languidity and playfulness seem the order of the day. However, more chaotic yearnings stir below the surface.

Alongside the slew of soul-searching in castles, resorts, libraries and zoos, are two experimental programmes that take our impulses one step further, blurring the lines between reality and fiction, inviting us to lose ourselves between the frames. After all, the term relax, Latin relaxare, from re- (expressing intensive force) + laxus ‘lax, loose’ suggests intensely letting loose. Let’s take relaxing seriously.

Rest & Relax runs from 7 – 29 September 2024 at Oldham Theatre.
