Full Synopsis
Set in the devastating aftermath of the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan (aka Super Typhoon Yolanda) in the director’s hometown of Tacloban, Whether The Weather Is Fine is an off-beat and tender portrait of a family coping with the climate crisis. Revolving around Norma, her son Miguel and his girlfriend Andrea, the charming trio discover their ideas of home differ as they trudge through their city’s ruins. While Norma frantically searches for her missing husband, Andrea desperately dreams of escaping to Manila to be a singer. Meanwhile, Miguel is caught in the eye of the storm, occupying the liminal space between staying to pick up the pieces of his past and escaping the typhoon’s carnage for greener pastures.
This Locarno Cinema e Gioventù award-winner features arresting performances by Filipino TV legend Charo Santos-Concio and rising stars Daniel Padilla and Rabs Rifol. The heart-wrenching meditation on disaster buoyed by transient moments of levity, whimsy and absurdity is punctuated with an entrancing score including Visayan pop tunes and synthesiser beats.
