Synopsis
Hoping to cut his debut album for a big record label, James, a young Indonesian rapper, journeys to Hawaii in search of his creative calling. But his father, who barely speaks English, refuses to give up his role as James’s manager and personal assistant. Haunted by the memory of his late brother, James finds himself torn between the cutthroat demands of the industry and his only remaining kin.
Starring Chinese-Indonesian rapper Brian Imanuel Soewarno (Rich Brian), Jamojaya is a lushly cinematographed portrait of a father-son dynamic complicated by cultural differences, suspended between the heaviness of the past and the inexorable lightness of the future. Dreamy visions of the tropics, intimate conversations, and the lurid, pulsing rhythms of the stage collide in writer-director Justin Chon’s latest Asian-American drama.
