Synopsis

Radiance tells the story of three estranged Aboriginal sisters—Cressy, Mae, and Nona—who reunite at their rundown childhood home in Far North Queensland for their mother’s funeral. Each sister arrives carrying personal wounds and unresolved tensions: Cressy, a successful opera singer; Mae, the responsible eldest who remained behind; and Nona, the youngest, free-spirited and unpredictable, who holds an unsettling truth. As the day progresses, the women’s long-suppressed emotions begin to surface and family secrets are revealed.

A feature debut by Rachel Perkins and only the third feature film directed by an Australian Indigenous person, Radiance is based on the stage play by Louis Nowra. The lead actress, Deborah Mailman, won Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role at the 1998 Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards.

In 2021, the NFSA completed a full digital restoration of Radiance, with its restored version that premiered at the Brisbane International Film Festival in October 2021 and screened at the Sydney Film Festival in November 2021.
